http://www.buffleheadsoapco.com/
It's a duck. A cheeky little bugger with a funny name. They're indigenous to the US and can be found up and down the East and West coasts. Ok... so why a duck? I promise this won't turn into the Gordon Bombay speech...
When I started to formulate a new recipe, I knew what I wanted out of the soap and one of those things was to break out of the traditional vegan/tallow mold and bring something new to the community. And from that came duck fat!
The recipe is: Potassium Stearate, Water, Potassium Palm Kernelate, Glycerin, Potassium Tallowate (Duck), Fragrance, Blush Kaolin Clay
Some of these ingredients are probably familiar to you. Some of them are not. So let me break it down:
Palm Kernel Oil: First, the palm products I use are from a sustainable and ethical source (certified by the RSPO). I took the extra time to find these because I believe in what they're about and palm is a wonderful additive to soap. In this case, the PKO is acting in a similar fashion to coconut oil. However, PKO holds a distinct advantage. It's not as cleansing as coconut oil, meaning it's not as harsh on your skin and less people tend to react to it. It also results in a much faster load and build, skipping the froth stage experienced with coconut oil. When sourced from an ethical/sustainable farm, it truly is a superior product to coconut oil in every way.
Duck Fat: I knew I wanted an animal fat. And while I truly believe that it's possible to emulate tallow in vegan form, it's a lot easier just to use tallow. But why not beef? If you've ever cooked with duck fat, you know that it's a very soft (often liquid at room temperature) and creamy fat. That translates very well into the lather, giving you that tallow feel we all love. It's distinct advantage over beef tallow is that its skin conditioning qualities are much, much higher. It allowed me to create a soap that left your skin feeling very conditioned without leaving behind a slime when washed away.
Blush Kaolin Clay: A clay? Really? Yes! Clays got a bad rep from the early days of shave soap making, but they bring so much to the table. Kaolin provides extra glide to a lather and while that's certainly a benefit, it's not the main reason I used it. Kaolin has helped me to create a very stable, long lasting lather necessary to enhance the experience of our head shavers and lady shavers out there. It's also added to the density and barrier (cushion) in our lather by suspending moisture throughout. And it does all this while washing away cleanly, leaving you with an optimal skin condition for any post shave products you may use. To take it one step further, I opted for blush kaolin over white kaolin because blush kaolin's mineral make up is excellent for fighting irritation.
As for the scents, they're all blended in house from high quality fragrance and essential oils and are original to Bufflehead Soap Co. Many of them were inspired by positive experiences I've had throughout my life and I sincerely hope they do the same for you.
The soaps are hot poured at 3.5oz or 100ml into an 8oz waterproof tin, creating ample loading room. Each tin is then packaged in a cotton bag and labeled.
To sum it up...
The wet shaving community has been my driving force. I made this with you in mind and it's of the utmost importance to me that you enjoy it. I also want you to share your love for wet shaving with a friend. That's why each soap ordered will come with an empty, sample sized container. It's my hope that you'll love Bufflehead Soap Co. so much that you'll fill those jars with it. But the most important thing to me is that you fill them with something you enjoy and share it with a friend. It's these little things that make this community so great.
