This is the latest review of the razor we have received.
Thanks
Lynn,
I am not sure exactly what you and Don may be looking for in terms of
my evaluation of this razor but following are my observations and some may
be relevant and some may be not:
Italian made straight razor blade.
Heavy blade at 2.6oz without balance.
Overall workmanship relating to the steel was very nice and appealing to the eye.
Blade shape is a wedge and the grind looked very well done to me.
Sharp edges at all intersecting corners of the shank and tang. All corners should be
rounded over touch for comfort reasons. I did not strop the razor but for someone
my age with thin skin I am sure it would not have been comfortable.
Jimps were well done top and botton allowing a comfortable grip.
Spine is different widths from side to side.
Hone wear is very different from side to side.
Edge is a bit uneven from side to side and is probably a reflection of the
differences in the spine while on a hone.
Edge had two tiny dings, perhaps 1/64th of an inch which I attributed to the
previous shaver who did not hone nor strop the razor.
I decided to touch up the edge just a bit with about 8 strokes on a jnat.
The shave was comfortable overall and a single pass left me just fine with
the result.
My second shave was comfortable as well and I did nothing to sharpen the edge
after the first shave to include no stropping.
Scales and general observations:
The scale shape at the pivot was no where near substantial enough to support a
blade of this weight. I think wood is not the correct material for the scales on this
heavyweight blade.
The blade was loose in the scales and I could not snug it up.
The washers used both on the exterior and the pivot washers were
too thick and distracted from the appearance. And I really did not
understand the reason for the thick pivot washers.
The blade was well centered in the scales.
I believe the spacer should have been angled more and probably a touch
thicker for this particular blade.
Conclusion: I liked the overall look of the blade itself. This is what I would
describe as a serious straight razor. With some of the issues mentioned above
addressed I would be more than happy to purchase a razor from the maker if
I could afford it. I also think a ¼ hollow would make this an even nicer and
more appealing razor
