THE SECRET OF STEEL: THE TAMAHAGANE

One of the secrets dell'insuperata quality of Japanese swords is in the use of a metal called exceptional and particular tamahagane (jewel steel), obtained only with the traditional Japanese method for the manufacture of steel, called Tatar. This process can produce a pure steel (high carbon content, low percentage of sulfur and phosphorus that may impair the quality), using iron sand with glowing charcoal fire in a furnace of clay. Steel obtained by this process, only a part, the most perfect, is classified "tamahagane. The oven measures three meters in length, a width and a half in height. You pour sand iron and coal for a period of seventy hours, during which the sand iron melts. In a processing cycle using eight tons of iron sand and thirteen coal, which produces a block of steel about three tons. Of this huge block, just a ton + tamahagane.
After the Second World War (during which many were manufactured swords for the officers) all ovens were closed and steel were introduced Western methods, a crisis of modern manufacture of traditional swords.
In 1977, the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai restore operations Tatar, thanks to government funding. He appealed for aid and advice of Abe Yoshizato, swordsmith only survived since the Second World War he was appointed National Treasure for his great skill in the art of forging. Since then, plants constructed Yokotamachi, is regularly produced tamahagane with the traditional method, and Japanese young people are trained so this ancient art is not lost.
